Holiday Traditions

With Thanksgiving over and December just around the corner... It's time to start thinking about Christmas (If you aren't already!) What are some Holiday traditions you and your family do?

I know some people get their tree up as soon as Thanksgiving is over. I think we are going to try to get ours up this weekend. It will be a artificial tree this year since we have a little guy who is still all over the floor, pine needles are a mess!

Clipart

When I was younger, my parents had a tradition with allowing us to open a gift on Christmas Eve. It was always an ornament.. Every year it was fun to hang our new ornament and remember all of the previous Holidays with the ornaments from the past.

Christmas Eve we would also get in the car and drive around looking at all of the Christmas lights.

Christmas cookies are another tradition I did when I was a child that I still do now. I found a recipe that I keep using that is just delicious!

What are your traditions?

Play Area

I use to use the end of our living room as a work space, which worked out fine while our munchkin was younger. Now with as active and all over as he is, I moved my work space and made him his own play area - just for him!

I think he is still enjoying it... don't you?

When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?

I have always had an interest in creating something that was not there before. As a child I dabbled in crochet, as a young adult I worked in the graphic arts industry where there was always something physical to show for your efforts, a book, magazine, ad, etc. In my 50s I went back to school and became an RN and started sewing as a stress relief, artistic outlet, and for just plain fun. That was in 2005, by 2010 I felt ready for the next step and opened my Etsy store.

Do you work outside of your Etsy shop? If so, how do you find time for both?
I am working full time nights as an RN specializing in surgical oncology. I work 3 12 hour shifts, and use any spare time for crafting.

How did you learn about Etsy?
I learned about Etsy from a relative who is an artist and has a shop there.

When did you start your shop?

My shop opened 9/28/2010. I had always heard that any small business takes 2 years to show a profit and establish a clientele and proceeded under that assumption. Now, after a year and a month, I feel that is an accurate assessment. Any profits I have made I have re-invested in supplies, and the family checkbook has been very involved. It started slowly, but my reputation is becoming established, and I have repeat customers as well as new ones.

Where does your inspiration for your items come from?

I find inspiration from the beautiful colors and textures in fabrics; each abounds with possibilities. If I did this day and night for years, I could never implement all the ideas swirling around in my head!

Is there a certain item with a story behind it?

One of my more successful items is a wrap-style ballet skirt. My daughter has been dancing for years, and those skirts are expensive to buy retail. I have developed one that I can sell for less than half the store price, and it is finding a place with dance students all over the country. I am glad to fulfill that need and help the students find an affordable source, since I know how expensive that training is.

Do you have advice for any shops just starting?

For any shop just starting, don't give up! Use your initial time to develop a good inventory, reinvest any profits, and always take the best care of your customers that you can. When I retire some day I will be glad to have my small business in place.

Do you have a Facebook fan page?
I only use Etsy online, since my time is limited. I do some local craft fairs and also have an in-town gift shop that keeps my items on consignment. Those 3 outlets are enough for me right now. I would prefer to grow them rather than branch out in too many directions and risk poor customer service.

It is wonderful to be able to create whatever item I am feeling that day, and I love making doll clothes, doll quilt sets, regular size quilts and table runners, and my ballet skirts. I make some ornaments every year, this year being machine embroidered lace ornaments.

Fun Questions to Get to Know You:

What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?
Pink soup. Being 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Ukrainian by heritage, I felt I loved potatoes so I should also love someting from my other genetic side. Borscht was just too weird for me, could not get past the visual. I grew up in the suburbs of Long Island, NY and apparently never developed sophisticated taste buds...

Do you have any hidden talents?
I believe my hidden talent is in hiding still. Hope I can find it soon.

Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
Other peoples bad habits that drive me crazy... being LATE! I am always early.

What is one thing you miss about being a kid?
When I was a kid the days stretched on forever. I wish I could recapture that feeling of so much available time. There is so much I would like to do now.

Heat Pad Tutorial

Whether you are a cold sissy like me, or have sore muscles- a heat pack is a great thing to have on hand! They are easy to make and last forever!

What You Will Need
Fabric of your choice
Rice to fill
Aromatherapy oil (Optional)
Thread

Start by cutting your fabric to size desired. I cut mine 17x17 inches. Your fabric will be folded in half. I made mine a rectangle so I can wrap it around my neck, over a shoulder, or lay with it under my back. You can make yours bigger/smaller in any size  :)   Sew the bottom and the side with a 1/4 inch inseam leaving the top open. Trim the one corner. (If you would like to add aromatherapy oil to your rice, do so now. Mix it up well and set to the side.)

Fold the end of your fabric down about 1/2 inch and iron it flat.

Now turn the fabric right side out and push the corner out. Measure your fabric to find the center and use a pin to mark it 2 inches in on each end. Mine was 8 inches tall so 2 inches in the width I marked it at 4 inches with a pin.

Sew a straight line down in between your 2 pins. This will help keep your rice spread out evenly.

Now fill your heating pad with your rice pouring it down each side evenly. Fill it up about 2/3 of the way full. You want it to be flexible to bend where you need it to.

Sew the open end shut close to the edge.

Heat up and enjoy  :)

(Be careful not to heat too long, start with 2 minutes and test how hot it is on your skin.)

I usually try to get my sewing done while  my little guy is napping or in bed, but occasionally I have projects I work on during the day. When I do my cute little shadow is right there digging through my fabric with me handing me pieces he likes  :)   He loves when I turn my animals right side out and begin to stuff them, it always makes him laugh!

Read ahead to learn more about this talented registered nurse and how to enter for your chance to win. :)

When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?
I have enjoyed crafting for as long as I can remember. That was always my favorite part of vacation bible school when I was little, craft time! Then a couple of my friends and I got together to try out some tie dye fun and I couldn't stop! I am addicted!

Do you work outside of your Etsy shop? If so, how do you find time for both?
I work full time as a registered nurse. I do most of my tie dye on my days off after the kids have gone to bed or in the morning before they get up.

How did you learn about Etsy?
I learned about it through the grapevine of friends.

When did you start your shop?
August of this year!

Where does your inspiration for your items come from?
Some inspiration comes from other Etsy artists and through searching other websites I combine what I see to come up with my own creations.

Is there a certain item with a story behind it?
Not currently in my shop, but my first items I sold were matching 4th of July shirts to a couple of adorable little boys! Thanks Kristin for getting me started!

Do you have advice for any shops just starting?
Enjoy it! It takes time to get established but enjoy every step! Don’t list all of your items at once, do it over time to help increase the amount of exposure your shop will get.

Do you have a facebook fan page? Twitter?

Any other info you would like to share?
My favorite thing to tie dye are custom orders that have great meaning behind them, for example shirts for kids to wear to their birthday party, baby shower gifts etc!

Fun Questions to Get to Know You:

What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?
I am not very adventurous, I would have to say a ham, pickles and mustard sandwich.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I am not sure I would call it talent, but I love to attempt to crochet new things and love to take pictures, mostly of my two adorable children.

Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
I have hard time when people are not confident in themselves.

What is one thing you miss about being a kid?
Going outside first thing in the morning and playing until the sun went down!

What was the funniest prank played on you -or- played BY you?
One time in high school my house and dads truck got forked, tp'd and cornstarched! Boy was that a mess! Still to this day not even sure who did it but I have my suspicions ;)
