When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?
As a kid I was really into beads and project kits. At the end of high school I discovered wire and it was impossible for me to sit still. I couldn't just sit and watch television, I had to twist up little creations with my hands to be content. It wasn't until I got pregnant with my daughter that I decided to put wire to better use & focused on making jewelry. From there I went to crochet, sewing, knitting, drawing, painting, photography, the list is endless.
Do you work outside of your Etsy shop? If so, how do you find time for both?
I don't work in the traditional sense outside of Etsy. However, I do take about 23 credits a semester and am now doing a 20 hour a week unpaid internship on top of that! I also have a beautiful 2 year old daughter that I take care of so I'm pretty busy. My body has adjusted to very little sleep and I take as many online classes as I can scoop up. Somehow I find the time for all of it, I love staying busy and getting full use out of my day.
How did you learn about Etsy?
I learned about Etsy long ago as a shopper. I love shopping on Etsy and still shop a great deal there. While looking at other people's shops I got the inspiration to create my own. I knew it was something that I would take joy in doing.
When did you start your shop?
I started my shop July 26, 2011 but I didn't get serious with it until about September. I'm still pretty new to Etsy but it has been a great experience so far!
Where does your inspiration for your items come from?
My inspiration comes from everywhere! Things I see in stores or magazines that are overpriced or I think I can make cost cheaper and be better. Materials are extremely inspirational to me as well. Set me loose in a craft store and I'll come up with hundreds of new ideas just by looking at the yarn, fabric, wire, etc.
Is there a certain item with a story behind it?
My ear pins were originally made for my friends daughter. She was ten and really wanted her second and third holes in her ears but her parents wouldn't allow her to have them yet. I designed these ear pins to have the appearance of multiple piercings while only using one. They have gone over well in my Etsy shop for women of all ages.
Do you have advice for any shops just starting?
I'm really just starting out myself but I would say to keep at it and enjoy what you do. I know it can be discouraging at times but it's worth it in the end. Always try to keep a positive attitude, I feel that it reflects to your customers and in your work. Also, a picture speaks a thousand words. Make yourself stand out through your photography.
Do you have a Facebook fan page?
I just started a Facebook page for my shop.
I plan to start a blog in a few months when I have more time.
Any other info you would like to share?
I really want people to get interactive on my Facebook page and etsy. I have a referral program where you can get discounts for referring friends to my shop. I'd love input on products, colors, ideas, anything really. I hope to make my Facebook page a place where customers can be a part of the creative process. If you have any ideas or requests please share them with me I am very friendly. :D
Fun Questions to Get to Know You:
What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?
I haven't really eaten any weird food but I've definitely had weird combinations. I'd have to say the weirdest things I've ever eaten all happened during my pregnancy. I had the strangest cravings. I would eat things like peanut butter and applejack cereal sandwiches dipped in ketchup. Even saying that makes me cringe but I ate them all throughout my pregnancy.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I have a great eye! I minored in photography and absolutely love capturing images that reflect the way I see the world. A lot of people say that my most interesting talent is aerials. Although I'm not the best at it yet it is one of my favorite things in the world. If you are not sure what this is you can check out my school here to get an idea:
Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
Ignorance and dishonesty are my biggest pet peeves ever. On a lighter note I hate when people shake there leg when your sitting by them and it makes the whole couch have a mini earthquake.
What is one thing you miss about being a kid?
I miss being carefree, spending my days however I wanted without feeling rushed or stressed.
What was the funniest prank played on you -or- played BY you?
I'm not a big fan of pranks. The closest thing to a prank that has happened to me is when my brothers used to put fake bugs everywhere.
