When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?
I started crafting when I was a freshman in high school. I was always interested in fashion, but I never pursued it until then. My mother enrolled me in Saturday classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, where I learned how to sew, sketch and make jewelry. Even after the courses, I continued to experiment and practice what I learned. From then on, my passion for creating grew and four years later, I started my own Etsy shop.
Do you work outside of your Etsy shop? If so, how do you find time for both?
Yes, I do. I am actually a full time student studying to get my dual degree in Supply Chain Management and Finance. I also work part time at my school as well. It can get extremely hectic, and very hard to manage. But if you love what you do, you'll make time for it. My studies are obviously my first priority, but I will always leave time for my Etsy shop. It's fun and it's a great way to help me relax, when I have a lot of school work on my plate.
How did you learn about Etsy?
My mom actually showed me an article in Business Week about how this lady made clothes with the patterns she purchased on Burda Style and sold them on Etsy. I decided to check Etsy out, and after reviewing their policies, I decided to give it a chance.
When did you start your shop?
I started my shop 3 years ago, in August of 2009.
Where does your inspiration for your items come from?
My inspiration comes from everywhere. Pinterest has been giving me great colors lately, which I incorporated in my Spring/Summer 2012 collection. I am in love with Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girls. Her style is very feminine and classy, which is what I aim for in my clothing and jewelry. Also, flowers are beautiful and I try to include them whenever it is appropriate.
Do you have advice for any shops just starting?
Be true to yourself. It's easy to recreate a popular trend for quick money, but then you'll be lost in the crowd. It feels much more rewarding when you sell a creation you know is truly your own.
Also, don't give up. Selling on Etsy is very competitive. They have over 500K sellers, so it's not going to be easy to generate sales. But be patient, join social networks and Etsy teams and keep on creating. It only takes one person to purchase and spread the word about your amazing shop.
Do you have a Facebook fan page? Twitter? Blog?
Any other info you would like to share?
I love working out! I am currently learning MMA.
