When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?
For as long as I can remember I have always had to have my hands busy creating something, or designing something. I started off drawing and painting, as this was something both of my brothers were extremely gifted at, but realized that as creative as I wanted to be, I wasn't a very good artist in that aspect. That moved me into web design and graphic design - around the age of 12 I designed and coded my first web site. My experience with jewelry design came a few years after that when I discovered a jewelry supply catalogue (I believe it was Fire Mountain Gems) and I just thought to myself 'I can learn to do that!'.
Do you work outside of your Etsy shop? If so, how do you find time for both?
I do. Right now I am working full time from home as a freelance graphic designer. Even though I'm at home, I still need to balance things and lately it seems like I am more full-time jewelry and part-time graphic design! I'd say in all, I'm working a steady 10 hours a day, which is a lot of hard work, but my real problem is balancing both work and personal time. It is still a struggle for me, but as long as I love what I do, I think I've accepted the fact that personal time is very limited right now.
How did you learn about Etsy?
I believe I found it while searching Google one day, and was fascinated at how talented people were!
When did you start your shop?
I joined Etsy on March 6, 2007. I can't remember how soon after that I opened my shop, although my first sale came on May 30, 2007 so it couldn't have been too long after joining!
Where does your inspiration for your items come from?
I find inspiration everywhere. Mostly from music. It's very rare to find me working and not have the radio on. I also find great inspiration from the materials I work with - like, I will order some amazing gemstone beads, and within minutes of receiving them I will have all kinds of design ideas thought out!
Is there a certain item with a story behind it?
Not so much an item, per say, but my entire shop. I only recently reopened my shop a few months ago after having a family tradgedy. My mom, who was my best friend, passed away in January 2012 and one thing I realized is that she is one of the only people who kept encouraging me to follow my dreams and passion. That made me decide to reopen my shop and work harder then I ever thought possible. I wanted some kind of dedication to her, so, the background in all of my current photos is a light grey wood -- this is actually a wooden box that held flowers at her memorial. I think it works with my photos, to bring a cohesive look to my shop, but it also reminds me that she's still with me, still supporting me.
Do you have advice for any shops just starting?
Not to give up, and to never stop working! I had to basically start my shop over during my relaunch a few months ago, so I feel like I'm new again myself, but I remember how easy it is to get discouraged. New shop owners need to push those thoughts of discouragement and doubt out of their minds, and just continue to work on their shop. There are always improvements to make - photos, promoting, SEO, branding, etc.
Do you have a Facebook fan page? Twitter?
Fun Questions to Get to Know You:
What is the furthest place you have traveled?
Florida. I would like to do a lot more travelling, however, I'll have to get over my fear of flying first!
Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
Negativity. I am a very up-beat, positive person (not in an annoyingly cheerful, kind of way!) who always tries to look at the positive side of things.
Do you have any pets? If so what are their names?
3 cats. Our two girls are Cleatus, age 8, and Crawal, age 8 - yes, strange names. :) We also inherited my Mom's cat a few months ago whose name is Tippy and she's about 16 years old.
If you could get back a lost item from your past, what would it be?
All my 80's childhood stuff - Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, and My Little Pony!
What is your favorite food?
Poutine! (It's popular in Canada - but for anyone who doesn't know, poutine is fries covered with cheese and gravy!)
