When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?
'Crafting' or in my case photography has been part of me for almost my whole life. My dad was always taking photos and I loved going through his old black & white photo albums. When I was about 10 I got my first point-and-shoot camera to take with me on a hiking trip and only a few years later I owned my first 35mm SLR. One or another camera is always close by where ever I go. Just before I jumped on the digital train, I also did a little film developing and printing myself. These days I have my prints done by a pro lab. But who knows maybe I will get a printer in the future.

Do you work outside of your Etsy shop?
We moved to the US last year and my 'work' consisted of renovating our house for the first few months. Actually I am still doing some of it. Now, I am working on my photography full time, because I really want to get into people photography, which I have only done here and there, but not on a regular basis.

How did you learn about Etsy?
I was browsing the net, social networking and found a tweet about a photographer, followed it to her blog and from there for the first time clicked on Etsy. I had not known it in Germany, even though Etsy has got a German site.

When did you start your shop?
January, 2012
Where does your inspiration for your items come from?
With photography it really is all around you. From family holidays on as a kid I have always loved the ocean, beaches, waves, wind, clouds. And when going for a walk in a city or in nature anything that strikes me. Be it because of color, size, shape, you name it. There is always something interesting to see. The question is: Can you capture it in a photograph?

Is there a certain item with a story behind it?
Except for still lives, and sometimes even those, there is always a story to a photograph, simply because I was there, for a reason. And I saw what I captured, for a reason. It might have been documentary, weird or plain beautiful to my eye. For example, the black and white magical-fairy listing: to some they are just a couple of trees in a forest. To me, it struck me how close they stand together, growing into the sky together, their roots hugging the earth together. It is a simple, but magical photo to me. Somebody else commented on this picture that 'they look like chicken feet' – lol – yes, I guess they do, too. It is all a matter of perspective.

Do you have advice for any shops just starting?
Hmm, unfortunately, not really. I have not really been too successful on Etsy – I'd like to add – yet. But one general key when starting your own business is to be persistent, not give up and be good at and believe in what you are doing. This is not enough to succeed money wise unfortunately, but it is a good start.

Do you have a Facebook fan page? Twitter? Blog?

Of course, small businesses need to have a solid social media presence:

Any other info you would like to share?
If you live in the greater vicinity of Morristown, NJ and are interested in a portrait of you, your children or pets, I would love for you to get in touch with me. I am currently looking for models to build my people and pet portfolio.

Fun Questions to Get to Know You:

What is the furthest place you have traveled?
I guess that would be Australia (from Germany)

Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
Just one?! How about people doddling when a red light turns green (thus leaving those behind waiting for another turn) and generally when driving – I guess I am too used to German autobahns ;)

What is your favorite food?
Again, just one?! o.k. - Sushi :)

Do you have any pets? If so what are their names?
Not any more, I used to have dogs as a child and up to a few years back a cat. A Himalayan, named Cassie, but she passed away. Since both hubby and I now are allergic to cat hair we are not going to get another one, however in the future we are hoping for a dog.

If you could get back a lost item from your past, what would it be?
No item really – but I would have loved for my late dad to meet my husband

I like the picture of the speckled eggs in the nest. Are they real eggs or fake? What a neat decorating idea!

ImagesByCW said...

Hey Shana, the eggs are real. They are quail eggs. I just colored them (in photoshop) ;)
