Looking Back

Sometimes when I look through my photos on my computer I can't help but get side tracked looking back at old photos, especially of our little munchkin. Some of those newborn photos with those skinny looking chicken wing legs make me chuckle, and all of the precious ones of him sleeping peacefully melt my heart.  :)

When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?
I began making invitations in the fall of 2011. I have always loved the fun stationary and printable decorations I have seen online. After ordering a set of Halloween cupcake toppers off of Etsy last fall, I realized how fun it would be to design them myself. Within the next week I looked into design programs online, chose and downloaded Inkscape (my program of choice) and began teaching myself how to use the program. Ever since I have been having a blast designing invitations and decorations for all types of events!

Do you work outside of your Etsy shop?
I am a full time Director /Teacher at a preschool. I love working with the kids I teach! I get so much fulfillment out of seeing their growth and development, and am amazed everyday at how much young children are capable of doing & learning! Though running a preschool keeps me busy, I make time to run an ever growing Etsy business as well. Stationary design is so much fun for me I look forward to coming home and working on custom orders or new designs. I have to admit if I am not careful I loose most of my free time doing it, but if you love something why not spend your time doing it right!?

How did you learn about Etsy?
I first learned about Etsy while looking for decorations for my annual Halloween party. I found a link to adorable cupcake toppers and other printable decorations on Google and it linked to an Etsy shop. I explored Etsy from there and soon was hooked!

When did you start your shop?
I opened my Etsy shop on October 31, 2011

Where does your inspiration for your items come from?
My inspiration comes from all over. Lately I have been getting several custom orders where the customer has a specific vision in mind and I create it for them. I absolutely LOVE being able to turn my customers' visions into something beautiful.

When I am not creating custom orders I enjoy creating invitations and stationary sets inspired by things in my everyday life (being a teacher I constantly see things in children's books and all around me to inspire great ideas). I also try to keep up with trends, especially in the wedding field, and create stationery to incorporate and compliment these trends.

Is there a certain item with a story behind it?
All of my custom orders have wonderful stories behind them! Whether its a story personal to the bride and groom, a child's favorite thing, or a color scheme and theme to coordinate with a unique baby's room.

Do you have advice for any shops just starting?
I have found the Etsy teams to be a great resource. I find wonderful tips, networking and answers to a ton of questions all from team discussions, Not to mention all of the views I get from promoting on my team boards!

Butterfly Tree Branch

I found this craft from Sweet Paul's Blog. It's simple to make, and a beautiful piece for any room. After you read this post, you should check out all the other amazings posts there too!

Crafty Friday

This craft project was inspired by something almost identical I saw in a fancy shop here in NYC.
It cost almost $500, and I thought to myself, "hey, I can make that".
And so I did!

Butterflies049

Start by printing out butterflies.
I found mine online, simply google butterfly prints and millions comes up.
Cut them out.

Butterflies055

Hot-glue or super-glue a small branch to a vintage saucer.
Butterflies057

Fold the butterflies a little, so they look more alive and simple hot-glue them all to the branches. Place a glass dome over and voila.... You have a very cool objet D'art of your own. (And it didn't cost you $500).

Little Bunny Order

I finally came up with a little bunny for the girl who lost hers. I made about 5 trial bunnies :)  The first made me laugh it was just too uneven with proportions. I'm sure if I had taken a picture of it you would all have a chuckle too.  :)   I had tried to make feet in the shape of the lost bunny as well but they all turned out looking like the bunny was wearing combat boots!

Here is the first bunny I made to see if the Mother liked the body shape(the light grey fleece put off a glare). She did, so the final bunny will be light blue with and embroidered nose instead of the felt like in this one.

It was fun to make something that I know a little girl somewhere is going to treasure  :)

A Special Request

I recently was written a request on Etsy, and the story melted my heart! A little girl lost her favorite bunny named Benny in a taxi cab. They tried to find him, even creating a FB page called "Bring Benny Home".

Her mother saw my rabbits in my shop and was wondering if I could shorten the legs and ears to make it look more like Benny. I am attempting to create a new bunny in the shape as Benny as close as I can.  :)

Here is the missing Benny

Stay tuned for my progress!

Giveaway! - Sedruola Maruska's Yarn Obsession (Ended)

Another Thursday - Another Giveaway!

This weeks giveaway is from Sedruola Maruska's Yarn Obsession! Sedruola Maruska is giving away a OOAK Neckwarmer! Enter to win this for yourself or someone special in your life :)

Read ahead to learn more about this talented Executive Assistant , and see how to enter for your chance to win!

When did you start getting into crafting, and what did you start with?

I have always been crafty. When I was younger I loved taking photos and organizing them before "scrapbooking" was a huge thing. Then I loved created decor for our parties and family gatherings. Now I focus on my crochet and getting better every day in that craft so I can make it more prominent in my life.

Do you work outside of your Etsy shop? If so, how do you find time for both?

Yes, I'm an Executive Assistant by day. It's not easy, but my lunch hour and any breaks I get are filled with my Etsy shop and the weekends are busy with family and crochet for Etsy, publication and hoping for a book soon. I make sure to prioritize what I want to do and to make sure it's worth my precious time before I embark. So far, so good.

How did you learn about Etsy?
I'm really not sure how I learned about Etsy. I just remember the first thing I put in my shop were handmade envelopes. LOL

When did you start your shop?
I started my shop in 2006 when I was home on bedrest pregnant with our first child (my son who is now 5). I didn't really do much with it until 2008.

Where does your inspiration for your items come from?

Seasons, nature, my kids, fashion trends, stitch trends. . . whatever catches my fancy and makes me go "ummm" those are the things that inspire me.

Is there a certain item with a story behind it?

I don't think any of my items have a story yet. They are all inspired by a need of mine more than anything. The Bohemian scarf was inspired because I'd collected so much scrap yarn in that particular hue and I wanted to make something. The Sabrina Crop Top was inspired because I wanted to work with the stitch I used for the sleeves. The Crochet Cabled Scarf was inspired because I wanted to create something truly unisex and use cables in crochet. The list goes on, but they are all inspired by a need that arose in me.

Do you have advice for any shops just starting?

Yes, I think there are two important things to do 1) find your own voice because lots of people may do the craft you do, but not everyone will have your same voice; 2) Don't compete with everyone, compete with yourself. Challenge yourself to get better every day and you'll be happy with your direction and the direction your business is taking.

Do you have a Facebook fan page? Twitter? Blog?

Yes! Here they are in order of priority right now- Just click the link to take a look!

Any other info you would like to share?

I love custom project because they push my creative limits. Anyone can contact me for a custom project. I did custom afghans for my bridesmaids, each in a different pattern and color according to what I knew they'd love. I love to get a project like that again.

Fun Questions to Get to Know You:

What is the furthest place you have traveled?
Korea, I was there teaching conversational English for 10 months and it's the farthest I've ever been from home and the longest.

Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
Slow driving drives me nuts!!! I'm no speed demon, but when the speed limit is 45 and you're going 35 - 40, I can't stand it!

Do you have any pets? If so what are their names?
No pets right now, but we've promised my son we'd get a dog when we got a new house. . .

If you could get back a lost item from your past, what would it be?
I lost a box of all my photos when I was traveling to Korea. I made the mistake of packing them with my radio and I had to fill out a customs form. I lost most of my baby pictures and most of my college years photos. It still makes me sad to this day.

What is your favorite food?
I will eat potatoes any way you make them!!!

DIY Truck Table

I am excited to share this craft which I will be making for my little munchkin! I found it over at Taylor Made's Blog - head over there and check out all the other fantastic posts  :)

Truck Table
If you ask my son, "What do you want to do today?" you will get the same answer every single day. "Pway Twucks ". So in order to have even more truck playing time in my life, I made him a truck table for his birthday. I actually started out looking to buy one but they were all so bulky and expensive... DIY to the rescue.

Here is how the truck table magic happened:
I started with a cheap coffee table from Walmart. First step is to prep the table top. I did most of this but I had my husband pose for the pictures. The man can build anything but can't take a picture to save his life.

Tips for the table prep:
- Don't attach the legs
- Brush off the extra dust after sanding
- Make sure the tape goes all the way to the edge
- Apply 2-3 thin coats of primer and let that dry overnight

Now you want to tape off your "roads". Just get creative. I measured two matchbox cars side by side and figured 3" could be a good width for the cars to pass each other. So all of my roads are 3" wide. Use painters tape to cover where the roads will be. I made a big square for the parking lot.

I painted green for the grass and added a lake in the corner.

Remove the tape...

Paint your roads in with black paint.

For the street lines, I used white vinyl and cut it into tiny strips.

Cover the whole table with a clear coat.

My favorite part is the drawer that I thought of  :) Pretty much just an "L" shaped rail that we screwed to the bottom of the table. Make sure to get a tupperware with a lip so it can slide in and out.

I would say it was a successful bday present! I knew about sports but no one warned me when I had boys  I would play trucks every day :) But I am ok with it.

Isn't this a great idea? is anyone else going to give it a shot?
